Azores accommodation: choosing a base

Azores accommodation is easiest to plan by area, not by hotel name. On São Miguel most visitors pick between the city of Ponta Delgada and a quieter base such as Furnas. On Pico the ferry town of Madalena is the practical choice, and Terceira has its own base in Angra do Heroísmo.

Ponta Delgada has the old town and the harbour close together, and the airport is less than 3 km from the centre. That makes it the simplest first base, with day trips to the lakes and the coast by car or with São Miguel day tours. If your main plan is the sea, see Azores whale watching before you choose a harbour.

Where to stay in the Azores: the main areas

Choose the area first, then the room.

For most first trips, Ponta Delgada is the easiest base on São Miguel. Add one or two nights in Furnas if hot springs and the lake are the reason you came.

Ponta Delgada and the rest of São Miguel

The city is the transport hub of the island.

City centre and harbour

The city gates, the old town and the harbour area lie within a short distance of each other. The cruise terminal at Portas do Mar is about 500 m from the historic centre. Staying here keeps arrival and departure days simple.

Furnas

Furnas is the thermal and lake area of the island. You find fumaroles, the lake shore and the cooking holes for cozido here. The thermal pools and the historic garden park are separate places with separate tickets, so there is no shared Furnas thermal pass.

Near the lakes

Sete Cidades and Lagoa do Fogo are separate lake areas. Do not assume you can walk to every sight from your room. Plan on a car, a tour or the summer shuttle at Lagoa do Fogo.

Staying on Pico, Terceira and other islands

Pick the town that fits the transport you will use.

Madalena on Pico

Madalena is the ferry harbour with the link to Horta and a base for boat trips. It is not the same place as Lajes do Pico or the island airport (PIX). If you plan the mountain climb, see the Pico guide.

Angra do Heroísmo

The central historic zone has been a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1983. Staying in town puts the forts and the harbour on foot. The natural sea pools at Biscoitos are another coastal sight on the island. Read more in the Terceira guide.

Horta and the other islands

Horta has the marina on Faial. Details on Faial, Flores, Santa Maria, São Jorge, Graciosa and Corvo are on the islands page.

Tourist tax in Ponta Delgada, 2026

The tax is set by the municipality.

Ponta Delgada charges €2 per guest and night for up to 3 nights. Accommodation classed as nature-based pays €1 per night. Children under 13 do not pay. Residents of an Azores municipality, guests with a documented disability of at least 60 percent and people on a medically justified stay have their own exemptions. The tax is set per municipality, so do not assume the same rule on Pico, Terceira or elsewhere. Ask your host for the local amount.

Azores accommodation: frequently asked questions

Where should I stay on São Miguel?

For a first visit, Ponta Delgada is the easiest base because the airport, the harbour and most tours start there. Add Furnas if you want to spend time at the hot springs and the lake.

Is there a tourist tax in the Azores?

Ponta Delgada charges €2 per guest and night for up to 3 nights in 2026, with €1 for nature-based accommodation and no charge under 13. The rule belongs to the municipality, so ask your host about other islands.

Can I walk to the sights from my hotel?

In Ponta Delgada the old town and the harbour are close together. The lakes, Furnas and the coast are separate places that need a car or a tour.

Where do I stay to visit Pico?

Madalena is the ferry town with the link to Horta and a base for boat trips. Check the current ferry timetable before you plan a day trip to Faial.

Is Furnas a good base for a few nights?

Yes, if hot springs, the lake and the cooking holes are your priority. It is a thermal and lake area and not a city, and the main thermal sites charge separate tickets.
