Ponta Delgada Airport at a glance

Ponta Delgada Airport, João Paulo II, uses the code PDL and lies less than 3 km from the city centre. A taxi rank waits at the arrivals area. Three other islands have airports you may use for connections: Terceira (TER), Pico (PIX) and Faial with Horta (HOR).

Once you land, most visitors rent a car or join São Miguel day tours from the city. Read the car hire guide before you book, and see where to stay if you have not chosen a base yet.

Taxi and transfer from Ponta Delgada Airport (PDL)

The city is close to the terminal.

Taxis wait at the arrivals area, and the centre is less than 3 km away. Fares and travel times depend on where you go, so ask the driver before you set off and name your destination. If you arrive late or with much luggage, plan your transfer before you land. Some visitors rent a car instead, see car hire for the rules.

On other islands, check the arrival options for TER, PIX and HOR before you fly. Do not assume that a bus line meets every flight.

Lisbon to Azores and Porto to Azores

The shortest way in from mainland Portugal.

The 2026 summer planning shows direct routes from Lisbon to Ponta Delgada, from Lisbon to Terceira and from Porto to Ponta Delgada, with extra frequencies announced. From Germany, Frankfurt has a summer 2026 route to Ponta Delgada, with a flight time of about 5 hours 5 minutes out and 4 hours 40 minutes back. Days and fares change, so check the current timetable for your dates. Summer schedules end in late October, and the exact end date differs by route.

Boston to Azores and New York

Boston and New York belong to the North America network of the main carrier. A ticket from North America to Terceira, Pico or Horta does not mean a nonstop flight, so check the routing, any change of plane and the flight times before you buy. In the booking systems, NYC is a city code for the New York airports and not a single airport.

Getting from São Miguel to the other islands

Flights and ferries serve different islands.

Ponta DelgadaTerceira, Pico, Horta, FloresInter-island flights, stronger summer service in 2026

São Miguel, Santa MariaOther islandsNot ferry departure ports, fly instead

For most visitors with one week, fly between islands and use the ferry only for Horta and Pico. At the harbour, arrive at least 30 minutes before departure, since boarding can close 20 minutes before. A ferry price for a vehicle does not include the driver's ticket. Bad weather and quay changes can alter ferry plans, so keep a spare day.

Entry rules and ETIAS

The Azores are part of Portugal and follow Schengen rules.

US citizens can stay visa-free for up to 90 days as tourists. The passport should be valid for at least 3 months after you leave and have 2 blank pages. Schengen days are added together, so the Azores do not give you extra days. The EU plans to start ETIAS in the last quarter of 2026. It is not yet in operation and has no confirmed start day. The announced fee is €20.
