Ponta Delgada at a glance
Ponta Delgada, Portugal, sits on the south coast of São Miguel. The old town, the harbour and the main airport lie close together, so it is an easy base for a first visit. The airport is less than 3 km from the centre and has a taxi rank at arrivals.
Most visitors use the city as a base for lake visits, boat trips and canyoning elsewhere on the island. If you plan to go out every day, look at Ponta Delgada day trips before you choose where to sleep.

The old town and the city gates
The Portas da Cidade are a well-known landmark: city gates with three arches. They were first built at the old quay and later moved to the Praça Gonçalo Velho Cabral, where they stand today. They date from the 18th century. The black and white stonework makes the gates easy to find, and the square around them is a natural meeting point.
Do not confuse the gates with Portas do Mar. That is the name of the waterfront area with the terminal, not of the gates themselves. A walk from the gates through the old streets to the waterfront is short and flat. Evening light makes the gates a good photo stop, and the square nearby has a town hall and cobbled paving.

Harbour and cruise ship passengers
Portas do Mar combines the passenger terminal, the cruise quay, a marina, a promenade and a covered car park with 200 spaces. The area opened on 5 July 2008. The port operator places the passenger terminal about 500 m from the historic centre. That figure describes the terminal, not a guaranteed walk from every berth, so allow extra time if your ship docks elsewhere in the port.
If you arrive on a cruise ship with a few hours on land, keep it simple. Walk to the gates and the old town, or book a shore excursion with a set return time. Lake and crater visits take longer than most port stops allow, so a full island loop is rarely realistic on a short call. Parking in the covered car park is possible, but tariffs should be checked on site.
Whale watching and boat trips from the capital
Some whale watching operators work from Portas do Mar. Sperm whales can be seen all year and are more frequent in summer. Blue, fin and sei whales pass through mainly from April to June. Dolphins, including common dolphins, bottlenose dolphins and Risso's dolphins, are another possibility. Sightings are never guaranteed. Boats keep a regulated distance from the animals, and swimming with whales is not allowed.
Our guide to whale watching in the Azores explains seasons and rules in detail. Others leave from Vila Franca do Campo, so check the departure point on your booking.

Getting to the island and around the city
Ponta Delgada Airport, code PDL, handles most arrivals. Taxis wait at the arrivals area. For onward travel read the airport and transfer guide. A rental car helps for the crater lakes, but the old town itself is easy on foot. For places to sleep, see where to stay, including the nightly city tax: in Ponta Delgada it is €2 per guest per night for up to 3 nights in 2026.
Ready to leave the city? Sete Cidades and Furnas are the two lake areas most people visit first. Ribeira dos Caldeirões, a canyoning example, is about a 45 minute drive from the city.
Ponta Delgada: frequently asked questions
Is Ponta Delgada worth a stop or only a base?
It is both. The old town, the gates and the harbour need a half day. Most of the island's lakes and trails lie outside the city.
How far is the airport from the centre?
Less than 3 km. A taxi rank stands at the arrivals area. Check the fare before you set off.
How far is the cruise terminal from the old town?
The passenger terminal at Portas do Mar is about 500 m from the historic centre. The walk from your ship may differ.
Where do whale watching boats leave from?
Some operators leave from Portas do Mar in Ponta Delgada, others from Vila Franca do Campo. Check the meeting point in your booking.
Are the Portas da Cidade the same as Portas do Mar?
No. The Portas da Cidade are the three-arched city gates on the Praça Gonçalo Velho Cabral. Portas do Mar is the waterfront area with the terminal, marina and promenade.
