Azores kayaking: sea caves, crater lakes and volcanic rock

Azores kayaking comes in three very different forms. On the south coast of São Miguel you paddle a sea kayak from the marina at Vila Franca do Campo around the Vila Franca islet and its caves, a route of about 5 km. In the west the lakes of Sete Cidades offer flat water in a crater, with a rental base on the shore. On Pico, a guided tour combines a sea kayak with snorkeling along volcanic rock.

Prices run from €35 to €70 per person, as of November 2026. The cheapest tour pairs a double-seat kayak with a mountain bike on the lake shore, the Pico tour adds snorkeling.

Our picks: kayaking in the Azores

The Vila Franca islet tours are the sea kayak outing, with the entry-included version if you want one price. The Sete Cidades tour adds a bike to a lake paddle at the lowest price, and the Pico tour is the one that includes snorkeling from the kayak.

Kayak tours at Vila Franca do Campo islet

Two tours start at the marina in Vila Franca do Campo, each at €65 per person and each lasting 3 hours.

The first includes snorkel mask and snorkel, accredited guides, insurance, waterproof barrels and free photos and videos. It covers about 5 km, needs no previous experience and has a minimum age of 6. Normal fitness and comfort in open water are recommended, and it is not advised with back problems or during pregnancy. Snorkeling outside the islet is an option, not a promise, and rough sea can postpone or cancel the tour.

The second one includes the entrance to the islet, a guide and briefing, life vest and paddle, insurance, a dry bag and a snack. Because it covers entry, you do not pay the islet access fee on top. Arrive 15 minutes before the start. Operators in the area describe mid June to mid October as the usual window, with calmer water in the morning.

Sete Cidades: kayak and bike on the lake shore

The Sete Cidades tour is the cheapest at €35 per person, for 3 hours. It starts at the rental base on the lake margin and combines a double-seat kayak with a mountain bike. A short briefing, life jacket, helmet and insurance are included. The minimum age is 8, and life jackets are compulsory for everyone, swimmers too.

It suits couples and families who want to see the twin lakes from the water and from a bike saddle without a long paddle. Bring comfortable shoes, a change of clothes and a rain jacket. In uncertain weather the operator offers another date or a full refund. Our Sete Cidades guide shows what else the west of the island offers.

Pico: guided sea kayak and snorkel tour

On Pico the tour starts in Lajes do Pico, at the harbour, and lasts 2.5 hours. At €70 per person, the price covers a sea kayak with a seat, snorkel equipment, a dry bag for your phone and personal accident insurance.

Here you paddle and snorkel along volcanic rock on the open coast. Pico is also the base for the whale boats, so our Pico guide helps to plan a combined stay.

Which tour fits you

Choose Vila Franca for a first sea kayak, particularly with children from 6, and the islet-entry version if you prefer one price. Choose Sete Cidades for a relaxed morning on flat water plus a bike ride at the lowest price. Choose Pico if snorkeling is as important as paddling. Our Azores tours page compares these with land and boat trips.
