São Miguel at a glance
São Miguel belongs to the eastern group of the Azores, together with Santa Maria. Nine islands make up the archipelago, which is part of Portugal. Visitors call São Miguel the green island, and the name fits: crater lakes, pasture, forest and patches of native vegetation fill the land between the coast and the hills. It is sometimes written San Miguel, and it is the same island.
The island does not have one single headline sight. It has three separate lake areas, Sete Cidades, Lagoa do Fogo and Furnas, and each one needs its own stop. Most visitors base themselves in Ponta Delgada and head out from there. If you would rather not drive, São Miguel day tours cover the main areas in a day.

Where to start on São Miguel
Sete Cidades and Furnas are separate stops, not one loop. Ponta Delgada is the usual base.
Lagoa do Fogo and the shuttle
Lagoa do Fogo is part of a natural reserve inside the São Miguel nature park. Traffic to the lake is managed, and in 2026 a shuttle service started on 1 August. Adult fares of about €5 to €8 apply, so check the current price when you go. While the shuttle runs, the road up to the lake is closed to ordinary visitor cars, with exceptions for local residents and some tourism companies and taxis.
Do not count on driving up to the lake yourself, and do not plan to swim there. A day tour or the shuttle is the safer plan. A separate thermal site close to the Fogo area sits outside the village of Furnas and sells its own tickets.

Day tours, rental car or both
A round trip of the island is not one attraction with a single ticket. You pay for each stop separately: park entry, thermal pool, meal and any mountain fees are usually not part of a tour price unless the tour says so.
The table shows typical tour prices in 2026. They are estimates for the type of tour, not a price for a specific departure.
| Tour type | Typical price per person or group |
|---|---|
| Shared half-day tour | About €50 per person |
| Shared full-day tour | €90 to €100 per person |
| Private half-day tour | €200 to €250 per group |
| Private full-day tour | €300 to €400 per group |
For most first-time visitors a shared full-day tour is the best start. Add a rental car for a second or third day if you want to take the lake areas at your own pace, and read the Azores itinerary to see how the days can fit together.
Active things on São Miguel
São Miguel is the island for canyoning. Ribeira dos Caldeirões, one example, is about a 45 minute drive from Ponta Delgada. Boats for whale watching leave from the south coast, and the chance of a sighting changes with the season. For walking, read the hiking guide, because some trails on the island are closed from time to time.
The weather changes quickly between the coast and the lakes. Check the weather by month and bring a light rain layer in any season.
São Miguel: frequently asked questions
Is San Miguel the same as São Miguel?
Yes. San Miguel is a Spanish spelling that many searches use. The island in the Azores is São Miguel.
How many days do you need on São Miguel?
Three days cover Ponta Delgada, Sete Cidades and Furnas at an easy pace. With whale watching, canyoning or walks, four to five days feel less rushed.
Can you drive to Lagoa do Fogo?
Not freely in the 2026 summer season. While the shuttle runs, the road up is closed to ordinary visitor cars. Check the current rules before you go.
Can you swim in Lagoa do Fogo?
Plan on it being a viewpoint and walking area, not a swimming lake. The lake lies in a natural reserve.
Is São Miguel the only island worth visiting?
No. Pico and Terceira offer a mountain, vineyards and a historic town. See our guide to the nine Azores islands and the page on Pico.
