How Azores tours work
São Miguel has three separate lake areas, at Sete Cidades, Lagoa do Fogo and Furnas. A tour of the island is therefore a chain of stops, not one attraction with a shared entry ticket. Most day tours pick two or three areas, and the choice decides how the day feels.
Tours are sold as shared groups or as private trips, and as half days or full days. Check what the price includes before you compare. Entry fees, thermal baths, meals, mountain fees and transport are often separate.

Our picks: the most booked Azores tours
The Vila Franca boat suits you if you want a small group at sea, the Furnas evening if you want dinner and the hot-spring area after dark. The island tour of Terceira and the food walk are for travellers who stay beyond São Miguel or want something local, and the quad is the pick if you want to drive.

Typical prices by tour type
Rough guide prices for 2026. A single tour can cost more or less.
| Tour type | Typical price | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Shared half day | About €50 | One or two stops, a fixed budget |
| Shared full day | €90 to €100 | Seeing the main lakes in one day |
| Private half day | €200 to €250 | A small group that wants its own pace |
| Private full day | €300 to €400 | Families and groups with special wishes |
For most first-time visitors, a shared full day gives the best mix of lakes and hot springs for the price. Choose a private tour if you travel with small children or want to set the stops yourself.
São Miguel island tours: what a day covers
The lake areas are separate stops.
Sete Cidades
The twin lakes and the Vista do Rei viewpoint. The rim walk is a separate activity of about 2 hours, so a bus stop here is a viewpoint visit, not the walk.
Sete Cidades guide →Lagoa do Fogo
The crater lake in a nature reserve. In summer a shuttle controls the access road, and the 2026 season began on 1 August. The adult ticket costs about €5 to €8, and some tours may be allowed to drive up.
São Miguel guide →Furnas
Steam vents, a lake and thermal water. The historic garden park costs €17 in 2026 for the garden and thermal pools, and the cooking-hole zone charges €3 per visitor who does not live in the Azores. Neither is automatically part of a tour price.
Furnas guide →Boat trips
Whale and dolphin trips leave from different harbours and run on their own schedules, not as part of an island tour. See the whale watching page for seasons and rules at sea.
Whale watching guide →What to check before you book
The wording differs more than the prices.
What the price covers
Entry, a thermal bath, lunch, a mountain fee and transport are charged separately in many cases. Ask which of these are inside the tour.
Pickup and meeting point
Ponta Delgada is the usual base. A pickup from your accommodation or a meeting point at the harbour changes the day's start and end.
Ponta Delgada guide →Weather
Weather around the crater lakes can change the plan for the day. Ask how the operator handles a change of route.
Weather by month →Group size
Shared groups differ in size. Ask how many guests share the vehicle.

Azores tours: frequently asked questions
How much does a day tour of São Miguel cost?
Typical 2026 prices are about €50 for a shared half day and €90 to €100 for a shared full day. Private tours run from €200 to €250 for half a day and €300 to €400 for a full day. These are guide prices, not a quote for one tour.
Is a São Miguel island tour one ticket?
No. The island has separate sites with separate fees. Check which entry fees the tour includes.
Can I see the whole island in one day?
You can see the main lake areas, but not all of them in depth. Most day tours choose two or three areas.
Do tours run in winter?
Many do, but routes change with the weather. Check the date range and the meeting point for each tour.
Are tours to other islands possible from São Miguel?
Island hopping needs dated flights or ferries, and the ferry network does not use São Miguel as a port. Check current connections first.
