MiratecArts leads the Azores into world of music
It was the first time the Azores were visible at WOMEX, the largest and most important music fair in the world, held this year in Las Palmas, Gran Canaria. The Azores were represented through a stand dedicated to the Hoje Azores Today project, along with Cordas World Music Festival, highlighting MiratecArts and promoting the Azores to a new market as a prime destination for artistic culture.
The 5-day event proved to be the most diverse musical gathering in the world, with 2,700 music professionals from 92 countries in attendance, and more than 60 theatre artists, films, conference sessions, orientation opportunities with experts including panel discussions, networking, presentations and concerts in a 16-hour daily program.
The artists participating in the campaign Hoje Açores Today are part of the platform www.discoverazores.eu led by MiratecArts, with the support of the Regional Government through the Tourism Department. The 20 musical projects participating in the first phase of the campaign are: BekaWak, Bia, Bruma Project, Bruno da Rosa, Fat of the Land, Horta G, Hugo Almeida, João da Ilha, King John, Luís Alberto Bettencourt, Luís Barbosa, Myrica Faya, Nina, Rafael Carvalho, Raquel Dutra, Ronda da Madrugada, Sara Cruz, Sonasfly, Swift Triigga and WE SEA.
Montanha and Cordas Festivals nominated for Iberian Festival Awards
The Iberian Festival Awards celebrate the best in the professional world of festivals in the Iberian Peninsula, with awards in general dedicated to music festivals. Cordas World Music Festival has received several nominations since its launch, including landing on the list of TOP 10 Best New Festivals in the 2017 edition. This year, Cordas Festival has been nominated in five categories: Best Small Festival, Best Line-Up, Best Cultural Program, Best Touristic Promotion and Contribution to Sustainability.
The fourth edition of the awards, to be presented in Vigo, Galicia next March, also presents a category of awards dedicated to non-musical festivals. This is where the Montanha Pico Festival stands out, nominated for Best Festival in the Iberian Peninsula (program not based on music).
The Iberian Festival Awards is a project of APORFEST - Portuguese Association of Music Festivals - which also presents Talkfest, where MiratecArts Artistic Director Terry Costa will be a guest speaker at the 2019 edition at the Museum of Communications in Lisbon. This initiative aims to strengthen Iberian relations by optimizing and streamlining effective elements between the two countries.
Corpo Body Artfest
Corpo Body Artfest is a new MiratecArts project for 2019, this time devoted to the art of bodypainting. It will be part of the largest international arts festival in the Azores islands, Azores Fringe, with the first edition dedicated to the art on the human body scheduled for June 20 to 22 on the island of Pico. "From facepainting to bodypainting, tattooing and piercing, everything that artists decide is body art, is welcome," announced Terry Costa, MiratecArts artistic director. "Creativity, participatory democracy and support for development through the most varied art forms is the goal of everything we do, from the islands to the world."
It is never too late to enter the fantasy is the motto of Corpo Body Artfest, which grew from the participation of artist Vitor Oliveira at the largest festival of its kind, the World Bodypainting Festival, held in Austria last summer. Vitor Oliveira has been a partner of MiratecArts since its inception, and at Corpo Body Artfest he will lead workshops as well as present new work.
